A Hold On The Next Path Of Exile 1 Update

News

There has been some huge community backlash against Grinding Gear Games, the developers behind the Free To Play Path of Exile and the more recent Path of Exile 2 games. The director of the studio explained that they are facing difficulties supporting two games at once but are working hard to resolve the issues being faced by players of both titles.

A Promise To Keep

When Path of Exile 2 was announced back in November of 2019 the game director of Grinding Gear games, Jonathan Rogers promised that updates and support for Path Of Exile 1 would continue even with the release of Path of Exile 2. Around July of 2023, Grinding Gear games made the decision to support the two games as two separate entities each with their own mechanics and endgames.

Jonathan had believed the team had enough time to ready the endgame for Path of Exile 2 while it is still in early access and also prepare  a completely new feature called “leagues” on update 3.26 for PoE 1, “leagues” would be PoE’s version of seasons which was supposed to start around February.

This ultimately didn’t pan out as they couldn’t focus on a new content release for PoE 1 while also dealing with the bugs and glitches players were facing in the early access launch of PoE 2.

As such they had to make the decision to prioritize PoE 2’s launch and stabilization over the release of PoE 1’s update.

A Major Delay

Due to the extensive support that is required for Path Of Exile 2 Jonathan Rogers stated that he is unable to provide any date for the latest update for Path of Exile 1. He further stated that it is going to be more than a couple of weeks of waiting as they need to be sure that Path of Exile 2 doesn’t have any major bugs before starting work on Path of Exile 1’s update.

There is still a silver lining here as pre-production work for the update has begun and Jonathan Rogers has promised that work will begin on the latest update as soon as they’ve made sure PoE 2 doesn’t have any more major bugs to address.

However even after these statements it seems a part of the community hasn’t settled down, some stating that they always had a suspicion as to which one Grinding Gear games will support or prioritize and this decision to delay the update has proved them right.

Others stating that both the games aren’t in any playable state right as such the game that was released first and already has a majority of players should be given first priority. As such some streamers have taken up the task of running “leagues” themselves, one such streamer being Pohx.

Conclusion

The backlash from PoE 1 players isn’t without reason as PoE 2 was actually kickstarted by some of the PoE 1 players. Thus this decision to prioritize a game in early access over a game that has been fully released for a number of years at this point is baffling to so many, along with that it is even more disheartening to learn that none of the developers are even working to at least make the foundation for update 3.26.

While at the same time, taking the point of view of the developer side of things, Jonathan did state that they are new to supporting two games at once and did acknowledge that it was a bad decision to shift work from Path Of Exile 1 to 2 in the previous months as this 3.26 update was supposed to launch on November of last year but now has been indefinitely delayed.

Hopefully Grinding Gear Games can address the major bugs that are plaguing Path of Exile 2 as quickly as they can and then move on prioritize the latest update for Path of Exile 1 because it seems more and more players are getting frustrated with this decision and a lack of a clear date for the release is only adding fuel to the fire.
