Square Enix producer Yosuke Saito had teased more information about a new Nier title that will be released on the 15th anniversary of the series. The Nier series had recently gained a bit of a resurgence with the remakes and the amazing story of Nier Automata along with anime adaptations which also have seen success. There could be a new title in the works that adds to the Nier franchise.
Teasing A New Entry
In November of last year, Square Enix producer Yosuke Saito had hinted that if he does get work on any project with Yoko Taro it most likely will be Nier. But during that time Yoko Taro was working with Capcom on a number of small projects, one of which was a mobile game named 404 Game Re:set which was released and then quickly discontinued.
When asked if they are working on anything related to Nier, they had both expressed doubt on whether the next game would generate the same amount of hype and success that the previous titles had. Due to this remark many fans believe that the next title is most likely not going to be Nier and will be something completely new.
Early in May of this year Yosuke Saito had done an interview which was later translated by Gematsu, where he hinted at the upcoming projects that are being worked on at PlatinumGames. He hinted that since the 15th anniversary of the series is coming up he plans to do something to celebrate this milestone.
A Mobile Game, Apparently
In February of this year at a concert in London hopes were raised for fans when Yoko Taro was seen asking fans to show their love for the Nier series through applause. After which rumors had surfaced stating that the next Nier game could be something that is on mobile instead of console or PC systems.
Along with that, this apparent mobile title is facing monetization issues and developer costs. However since there is no concrete evidence all of the information mentioned should be taken with a massive grain of salt.
If the rumors do prove to be true, then it could actually spell a very bad ending for the franchise. The combat and technical fidelity of Nier cannot be portrayed on any mobile device. The visuals and changes in moment to moment gameplay of Nier Automata was a huge part of the whole experience which helped in distinguishing the title from its peers.
This sort of change could make those dedicated to the series quit as a mobile game simply cannot provide the experience and visuals compared to any dedicated system be it a console or PC.
The Potential Of The Series
No one can deny the hype and love the series has, its amazing story, music, visuals and of course the in-depth detailed story aren’t matched by any of its peers. The game has 26 different endings and while people may argue that some are slightly different than others. There are some endings which completely change the whole trajectory of the game if any one is considered canon for the next one in the series.
The remake of Nier Replicant from 2010 had already helped in resurging interest in the iconic series due to how unique the story was. The link between Nier and the Drakenguard franchise is still one of the most mind bending connections between games anyone can find.
The combat alone is enough to keep fans of the series wanting more but a good story is what is required to push the series back in the spotlight and if released, it can be confidently said that any doubts Yoko Taro might have regarding the success of the series will be put to rest.
1 Bottle Of Hopium, Please
It is ultimately up to Yoko Taro to decide in which direction to take the series, it cannot be denied that the series is well known for its unconventional gameplay changes and story presentation. What is a clear want is the release of the next title if it is in the works to be on PC and console, not on mobile.
While there are only rumors swirling around about the next title of the franchise, the best for fans of the series will be to keep watch and wait to see if any concrete news comes out about this supposed next title. While it has a chance to not be a Nier title, no one said it couldn’t be something connected to the franchise.
