Acura ZDX First Look Review 2024

The original Acura ZDX was one of the first coupe-style SUVs to hit the market in the late 2000s, and the all-new mid-size ZDX you see here is likewise a momentous debut for Acura, albeit for quite different reasons. This is Acura’s first all-electric vehicle, with up to 500 horsepower in the Type S and an estimated range of 325 miles for the rear-wheel-drive A-Spec. The new Acura ZDX electric SUV boasts a luxury look that should appeal to Acura fans. The ZDX shares the same 102-kWh battery as the Cadillac Lyriq and has a similar starting price to its Cadillac counterpart.

Color And Exterior:

The Acura ZDX’s exterior has been toned down, clearly inspired by the Precision EV Concept, but not to the point of being bland. The characteristic front fascia includes Jewel Eye LED headlights and the recognizable Chicane daytime running lights found on other Acura cars. This lighting signature is particularly noticeable in nighttime footage and closely resembles lightning strikes; it also extends to the taillights. On the nose, the Diamond Pentagon substitutes a regular grille and isn’t overly large. The darkening pillars give the glasshouse the appearance of floating over the broader lower body, which is a cool effect when combined with some of the bright colors offered.

While the A-Spec gets 20-inch alloys, the Type S features 22-inch wheels, the largest ever on an Acura vehicle. The Type S can have its standard all-season tires swapped with high-performance summer tires wrapped around gloss-black alloys. At the back, the lower body protrudes noticeably from the rear window, which is situated above broad taillight clusters with curved lighting signatures on the corners.

The complete variety of Acura ZDX colors will be released later, but we do know that the Type S will include the new Double Apex Blue Pearl, which was initially seen on the Precision EV Concept. The Type S trademark color, Tiger Eye Pearl, will also be available.

Dimensions:

Classified as a mid-size crossover, the dimensions of the Acura ZDX EV are nearly identical to the Cadillac Lyriq’s. In fact, the 2024 ZDX has an identical 121.8-inch wheelbase to the Lyriq. Length for the Acura is 197.7 inches, width is 77 inches, and the height is 64.4 inches. No curb weight specs were supplied, but the dual-motor models will probably get close to the 5,800 or so pounds of the heaviest Lyriq models.

Performance:

Acura has referred to the ZDX as a performance SUV from the start, so we expect it to be quite a quick vehicle. The powertrain in the base Acura ZDX A-Spec will consist of a single electric motor and rear-wheel drive, producing an estimated 340 horsepower. A dual-motor, all-wheel-drive version of the A-Spec will be available, but its outputs haven’t been shared.

We know that the dual-motor AWD Type S will deliver an ‘estimated’ 500 hp, so this model should be capable of a 0-60 mph time of around 4.5 seconds if independent tests of the 500-hp Lyriq are anything to go by. The base model will take about a second or longer to do the same. All ZDX models will have a maximum towing capacity of 3,500 lbs.

Acura will face the task of making the ZDX Type S not only fast, but also engaging, which is frequently difficult for purely electric vehicles that can feel fairly clinical. The Precision EV Concept includes an Instinctive Drive mode that introduces faster instrumentation and lighting, but this may not be enough to entice enthusiasts. Acura promised that the Type S EVs would be enjoyable to drive, and the 50/50 weight distribution should help it meet that goal.

Range, Charging, And Battery Life:

The ZDX has a 102-kWh lithium-ion battery with a planned range of 325 miles for the single-motor A-Spec, 315 miles for the dual-motor A-Spec, and 288 miles for the Type S. DC rapid charging of up to 190 kW will be feasible; in the A-Spec RWD, around 81 miles of range can be added in 10 minutes.

Interior And Cargo:

More firsts await inside the Acura ZDX; this is the first interior from the company to implement Google built-in. That’s just one aspect of a tech-laden, driver-focused interior featuring a combined 22 inches of screen real estate. This is split between the 11-inch Precision Cockpit Driver Information Cluster and the center 11.3-inch touchscreen interface.

Other tech-savvy features include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as an 18-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system with 14 amplification channels. Audiophiles will love this configuration, which includes a subwoofer, four speakers in the headliner, and Acoustic Lens Technology. The system also has a Beosonic one-touch sound control interface that allows customers to customize their in-car audio experience based on one of four audio moods: Bright, Energetic, Warm, or Relaxed. The brushed metal speaker grilles, which include a laser-etched Bang & Olufsen logo, give another element of style to the interior.

The Acura ZDX’s cargo space was not specified, but it should be comparable to or greater than the Lyriq’s 28 cubic feet behind the second row. Given the two cars’ comparable sizes, the rear seats will be able to tumble to boost cargo capacity.
