The new version of Asus’ 27-inch QHD gaming monitor TUF Gaming VG27AQL3A has just been launched. This monitor succeeds the VG27AQ that has received a positive reception and comes with improvements in screen brightness, response time and other editions done to gear it up for gaming enthusiasts. To understand how it performs in bothword-processing and end-game gaming, I’ve been using the VG27AQL3A for around a week now. Read on for the full review.
Display & Picture Quality
The Strix VA Series VG27AQL3A has a 27-inch IPS panel, a native QHD 2560 x 1440 resolution and an ultra-fast 170Hz refresh rate. It also has adaptive-sync variable refresh rate for smooth gameplay if used with appropriate graphics cards.
In my testing it; Observations In my testing I was able to notice that the images are very clear with bright and natural colors as soon as you start using the printer. This needs to have a matte anti-glare film as it offers a balance of sharpness and reflection without compromising too much on the viewing angles. The screen offers normal brightness of 400 nits with HDR400 that means it becomes bright enough for work in well-lit rooms but it is not as bright as top tier HDR gaming monitors.
The VG27AQ’s main upgrade from the previous generation is a far greater 1ms GtG response time allowing for smoother motion with less ghosting or smearing in gaming. There are a couple of disadvantages though – IPS panels can’t quite match the response time speeds of TN, but the VG27AQL3A only lags slightly behind.
Gaming Performance
The display offers an astoundingly smooth gameplay with a refresh rate of 170Hz and a low response time of 1ms GtG which the Asus VUF Gaming VG27AQL3A has to offer. This makes it ideal for fast and furious action games such as First Person Shooters, Racing Simulations, Fighting Games and Real-Time Strategies.
Thus, the support of Adaptive Sync means synchronized frames that provide a perfect result in terms of screen tearing and stuttering for AMD FreeSync and Nvidia G-Sync graphics cards. The monitor is not certified into G-Sync compatible by Nvidia but through experimentation with my GTX 3070 Ti GPU, it appears to work very fine.
Input lag recorded was 2.9ms, which is very low and adequate for any PC gamer who is very sensitive with the inputs delay. In addition to the fast pixel response times, there is a tremendous feeling of solidity when it comes to gaming with VG27AQL3A. Fast movements are clear as the day and everything generally runs smoothly.
Design & Connectivity
Asus inspired the VG27AQL3A with its TUF Gaming design Return of the black matte chassis, but with a touch of yellow on the back of the stand and the base. The stand provides 130mm height control, 90 degrees rotation ability, +5 degrees and -20 degrees tilt options, and +/- 165 degrees turning for the most comfortable angle. There’s also VESA mount compatibility of 100x100mm for you to use your own monitor arm.
On the backside you’ll get two HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.2 input for simultaneous connectivity of various devices. It is also has two USB 3.0 ports for charging of devices or connecting of other peripherals such as gaming mice and keyboards. For audio it has two Insta-Share 2W stereo speakers integrated with DTS technology for the sound to be produced to decent standards. A 3.5 mm headphones jack is also included for those who prefer using headphones this is good news.
Gaming Features
Not only can the VG27AQL3A bring the refresh rates and response times right down to the gaming arena, it also comes packed with a few niche options designed specifically with the PC and console gamer in mind. These include:

Specifically, it provides near-outstanding performance in delivering buttery-smooth experience perfect for multiplayer games.
While newer models of gaming monitors have Mini LED backlights and greater peak brightness for actual HDR, the VG27AQL3A performs outstandingly fine in terms of imaging quality for this price range. For the gamer who wants a high refresh speed IPS panel at under $400, it will be very satisfactory.
