Daylight DC-1: The Paper-Like Tablet with LCD Screen

News

The tablet is branded new iPad Pro (2024) and it is the thinnest device Apple has ever built; at least that is authentic, but a new tablet from a start up Daylight has a more intriguing claim to fame. The Daylight DC-1 is “the world’s first 60fps paper-like computer” so it is a mix between an Amazon Kindle and the iPad most would agree. Here is a breakdown of what makes this device stand out from the rest.

What is the Daylight DC-1?

The Daylight DC-1 is a special kind of tablet whose features contain the best characteristics of both Amazon Kindle and iPad. Its special attraction is the LivePaper display of 10. 5 inches that claim to be as best as an LCD in terms of response rate and refresh rate but looks like paper.

 LivePaper Display Technology

The LivePaper is the prime feature of the Daylight DC-1 and is referred as the ‘icing on the cake’. As with many technologies it might be hard to get into the details but the active component is a transflective LCD, which can be viewed with and without the backlight. What this means is that you can basically have the feel of the E Ink while having all the benefits of the LCD, whether it is read in direct sunlight or in a rather shaded area. Preventing blue light means that the amber only backlight will be less of a strain on the eyes, especially for people that are worried about getting their beauty sleep.

Comparing DC-1 to Kindle and iPad

The DC-1 situates its itself the space directly between the Kindle and the iPad. Although the Kindle is relatively free of disturbances and blurs one’s focus towards reading, it does not have as many features as an iPad does. The DC-1 is to combine the best of these two extremes decreed by user evaluations, meaning, less fractious than an iPad but much more than a Kindle.

 Major Characteristics of the DC-1

  • Generous Storage and RAM: Surprisingly, in terms of ports and storage the DC-1 is equipped, for instance with 128GB and 8GB RA, while the majority of e-readers have much less.
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth: Get connected with wireless Internet connectivity and Bluetooth integrated.
  • Passive Wacom EMR Stylus: Ideal for writing class notes and for drawing.
  • USB-C Charging: Contacts that offer quick and contemporary way of energy charging.
  • MicroSD Slot: Bluetooth and expandable storage to have more of it.

Storage and Memory

The GPU is paired with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB internal storage keeps all of your apps, books and notes. This is quite an enhancement when compared to the conventional e-reader hence making DC-1 to be more valuable across the different uses.

 Connectivity and Accessories

The DC-1 has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth built into the device to guarantee that connectivity is first rate. Taking notes or drawing is always useful when taking into account the intuitive passive Wacom EMR stylus. Charging is also kept simple and charging via the USB-C port is provided which is a plus the device also comes with a micro SD card slot.

 Battery Life

Among the records introduced by the DC-1, it is worth mentioning the enhancement of battery longevity. Daylight also states that the battery can hold a charge for days which is perfect for individuals who are in constant use of the gadget all day.

 Limitations and Drawbacks

However, like any other creation, the DC-1 possess some drawbacks as discussed below. You cannot download apps directly from the Google Play Store as the tablet does not have a slot for it means that you will have to look for apps from other sources. Also, the black and white screen and no camera and consequently the laptop is not designed for photo, video calls or movie streaming.

 Price and Availability

The Daylight DC-1 handset goes for $729 (approximately £575 / AU$1,100) inclusive of taxes but excluding the necessary charges. However, because of its apparent high price, buyers of the initial twp batches have been limited. The next batch is expected on September 30, this shows that there was a lot of interest and people where already getting ready early in the morning.

 Conclusion

The Daylight DC-1, therefore, opens the tablet market to a new type of gadget that successfully combines the calming feel of the E Ink reader and the versatility of the iPad. It has limitations, however, such a device and the advent of its promising technology is something that should not be overlooked by any avid user who is searching for a less distracting and an eye friendly device.
