Around February 2024 Tiny Ghoul and LEAP Studios rolled out their new game called Dicefolk which was published by Good Shepherd Entertainment. Dicefolk is the epitome of the game if Pokémon was a roguelike game.
“Dicefolk is a tactical roguelite game based on customizable dice and monster-catching mechanics. On your adventure as a Chimera Summoner, you’ll meet dozens of unique and powerful creatures that you can recruit to create the perfect team.”
The good news is Nintendo Switch players can enjoy this twisted Pokémon game on their Switch. Dicefolk will soon be releasing on Switch after being initially released on PC.
A World on the Brink: Humanity’s Last Hope
The game revolves around the concept of annihilation of humanity. A nefarious sorcerer Salem is being a threat to the humanity with her corrupted Chimera.
Chimera was once a benevolent mythical creature but how they are being used against humanity. To save the world from the brink of an extinction you take the role of Alea.
Alea is a young hero with extraordinary abilities to befriend Chimeras. She can use her abilities to fight back against evil forces threatening humanity’s extinction. So, you will follow Alea on a journey to confront Salem with the power of dices.
“Embark on a thrilling quest to save humanity from the grasp of an evil sorcerer. Build a team from over 100 unique, hand-drawn Chimera to suit your playstyle. Unlock all the talismans to uncover the mystical secrets behind the Chimeras’ existence.”
The Thrill of the Roll: Dicefolk’s Innovative Combat
The combat of Dicefolk game revolves around innovative dice-based system instead of turn-based attacks. Both you and your enemies need to control a pool of dice. Rolling dice can have various outcomes like your Chimera can deal damage or apply buffs.
“It’s all up to you! Customize your dice for maximum influence over your Chimeras’ attacks and abilities. Control the order in which battles play out and choose when parties take action. Dicefolk defies RNG and gives you unprecedented influence on the roll of the dice!”
If you are lucky enough to have high roll on then you can have greater impact on damage. Similarly, if you get low roll then you will have minimal impact. There are some features like strategically positioning your chimera to burn enemy dice. This gives the enemy a debuff which prevents them from activating their powers.
Building Your Dream Team
Throughout your gameplay you will encounter with Chimera with array of abilities and appearances. Each Chimera has their own distinct attack style, special moves and buffs.
“With a large variety of Chimeras to befriend and command, you’ll need to strategize and adapt your playstyle to suit each battle. From tough tanks to speedy attackers, each Chimera brings a unique set of abilities to the table. Your tactical choices will determine your success in battle!”
The game offers around 100 Chimera for you to discover. Each Chimera has potential to join your team to build your efficient dream team. You need to carefully create your Chimera roster to fully utilize all their powers. Try to consider what playstyle you want and what type of synergy you are looking for.
Progression and Customization
The game has replayability which fulfils the roguelike element of the game. As you progress through the game you will find different talisman, artifacts and passive buffs. You can mix match these elements to customize your team’s strength and weakness.
“Each playthrough offers its own rewards, and the Chimeras you encounter in one run can be entirely different than those you find in another. With different Chimeras comes different strategies to assemble your team for the perfect run!”
Every run you defeat an enemy you gain hefty number of rewards. You can use the rewards to upgrade your Chimera’s stats and skills. This will allow you to unlock new faces and acquire better consumable items.
Conclusion
The storyline of Dicefolk takes a backseat to let the roguelike dice combat shine. The character development is minimal and the world-building is similar to roguelike game. So, if you are looking for rich narrative you might get disappointed. However, if you are into combat heavy game that highly depends on luck then give Dicefolk a try.
