Introduction

A wireless network needs a good access point to ensure a fast, stable, and secure connection. However, with so many options on the market, it can be difficult to make the right choice. Fortunately, we have found an access point that can meet all your needs: the AP6-Pro & S8-POE from Alta Labs. This access point is one of the most advanced and powerful models available. In this review, we will discuss the special features of the AP6-Pro and the switch, such as the specifications, unboxing, software, user experience, and potential drawbacks. Finally, we will give our final assessment. If you want to know more about this access point, read on!

Specifications

The AP6-Pro is a dual-band, 6-stream, WiFi 6 access point that uses the Qualcomm Immersive Home 214 Platform. This platform includes a powerful and efficient chip designed specifically for wireless networking devices. With support for the latest WiFi standards, including 802.11ax, 802.11ac, and 802.11n, the AP6-Pro offers a combined WiFi capacity of 6.3 Gbps. This means that with this access point, you can enjoy a fast and stable connection for all your wireless devices, such as smartphones, tablets, laptops, smart TVs, game consoles, and more.
WiFi 6, also known as 802.11ax, is the latest generation of wireless networking technology and offers several advantages over previous generations, such as WiFi 5 and WiFi 4. The AP6-Pro access point uses WiFi 6 and benefits from these benefits. A key advantage of WiFi 6 is its higher speed. With speeds of up to 9.6 Gbps, WiFi 6 is 40% faster than WiFi 5, allowing you to download, stream, and transfer files faster. This also translates to less lag and buffering while using wireless devices.
In addition, WiFi 6 offers a higher capacity. By using advanced techniques such as OFDMA and MU-MIMO, WiFi 6 can connect and control more devices at the same time without sacrificing performance. This means you can add more devices to your network without sacrificing connection quality or speed.

WiFi 6 is also more efficient in energy consumption. With features like TWT and BSS Coloring, WiFi 6 can reduce device power consumption and extend battery life. TWT enables devices to communicate more efficiently with the access point and only be active when needed. BSS Coloring helps reduce noise and overlap in the network, optimizing performance.
In short, the AP6-Pro uses WiFi 6 technology and benefits from the increased speed, capacity, and efficiency that this standard offers. One of the disadvantages of the AP6-Pro is the fact that it uses a 1GbE port, where its counterpart such as the UniFi U6 Enterprise does have a 2.5GbE. But because the Enterprise variant is a lot more expensive, the AP6-PRO is more comparable to the U6-PRO from Ubiquiti.

The AP6-Pro distinguishes itself from other access points by a number of unique features. For example, the access point 4096 supports QAM, an advanced modulation technique that is one of the key features of WiFi 7. With 4096 QAM, the access point can transmit more data in the same time and frequency, increasing speed and efficiency. In addition, the AP6-Pro is equipped with four 5 GHz antennas, allowing the access point to perform better than 2×2 APs (i.e. the standard AP6 variant), with more than 30% higher throughput. In addition, the access point supports seamless roaming, which means that your wireless devices can automatically switch between different access points on your network without interruption. This is made possible by the support of the 802.11 k, v, and r standards. Installation and management of the AP6-Pro are simple.

The access point is IP54 certified, which means that it is resistant to dust and water (this is also a reason that it can be hung outside under a canopy, for example, quite ideal!). In addition, the access point is powered via Ethernet, so you don’t need a separate power cable. With the included mounting materials, you can easily mount the access point on the wall, ceiling or a suspended ceiling (see photos of the unboxing). The switch is also easy to hang. The AP6-Pro and S8-POE switch use an easy-to-use cloud-based management interface and a mobile app, allowing you to monitor and configure your network from any device. You’ll also have access to advanced features such as content filtering, VLAN, QoS, guest network isolation, zero wait DFS, intelligent WiFi scheduling, and more. However, it is noticeable that Alta Labs is still in its infancy. The hardware is good, and works properly. Still, the interface is a bit choppy, limited in options and cluttered. For example, some options are spaced out while it is actually much better to show them in the same screen. The app on the phone isn’t very special either.

Unboxing

The AP6-Pro comes in a stylish and sturdy box that gives you a good first impression of the product. On the top, there’s a Qaulcomm logo on it to indicate that there’s a Qualcomm chip inside. On the sides of the box, you’ll find some information about the main features and specifications of the access point, such as the WiFi 6 support, the 4096 QAM modulation, the cloud-based management interface, and the mobile app. On the back of the box, you’ll find a QR code that you can scan to learn more about the product and its installation. When you open the box, you’ll be greeted by the access point itself, which is neatly packed in a plastic bag. The access point has a compact and sleek design that fits into any environment. The access point is white in color and has a blue and white LED light on the front that indicates the status of the device. On the back, you’ll find the RJ45 port for the Ethernet connection and the reset button that you can use to factory reset the access point. The access point feels solid and qualitative and weighs about 0.4 kg.
From WiMood I received 5 Alta Labs AP6-Pro access points and one 8 port switch.

Alta Labs is part of SoundVision Technologies, and we know that company from VSSL and the TruAudio speakers.

The AP6-Pro is small, but very complete in terms of options. And so it is in the box. For example, wall mounts, screws, and manuals are included. However, cables are missing.

The bottom of the AP6-PRO is made of steel (passive cooling), and that’s a good thing. In use, it still gives off quite a bit of heat.

The AP6-PRO also has a very important option, namely a single POE port. However, this port does go with 1GbE, where slightly more expensive competitors opt for the 2.5GbE transfer speed.

The AP6 can also be used outdoors, and it helps to ensure that the cable is neatly concealed and the AP6 is attached as close to the wall as possible.

Okay, this was the access point, but what about the switch? Well, let’s take a look at that one now.

As mentioned, the switch is also equipped with hanging brackets, screws, adapter and a manual

Alta Labs’ S8-POE has 8 network ports, 4 of which are PoE (Power over Ethernet) and 4 are ‘regular’ – without PoE.
On the front is a reset button, and the pictured logo of Alta Labs. At the back there is only a connection for the power cable/adapter. The top also has an illuminated logo.

The bottom is equipped with a kind of rubber that keeps it in place.

By the way, lighting of the Alta Labs can be turned off. However, it can also change color per different ‘site’/location that you set.

Software

The AP6-Pro is equipped with a powerful and easy-to-use software that gives you full control over your network. The software consists of two parts: a cloud-based management interface and a mobile app. This software allows you to remotely monitor, configure, and update your access point from any device, whether it’s a desktop, laptop, or smartphone. The cloud-based console has advanced features set up to make your network safer, faster, and smarter, such as content filtering, VLAN, QoS, guest network isolation, zero wait DFS, intelligent WiFi scheduling, and more. The cloud-based management interface is a web-based platform that can be accessed via a browser. You don’t need to download any software (but there’s an app available) or install it on your device. With your Alta Labs account, you can log in and access all your access points connected to the cloud. With a single account, you can also manage multiple locations where your access points are installed. The cloud-based management interface provides a clear and complete overview of your network’s health and performance, such as the number of connected devices, bandwidth usage, signal strength, interference, and more. You can also customize individual settings for each access point or for the entire network, such as the WiFi name, password, channel, transmission power, security type/type, and more. With just one click, you can also perform firmware updates for your access points, so you’ll always have the latest features and improvements.

As mentioned earlier, it is a very complete interface, but it still has some work to do. For example, it is still in its infancy and there is still some work to be done. The mobile app is a great application that you can download on your smartphone or tablet. This allows you to monitor your network (by seeing what is happening on the devices in terms of speed) and configure it from your mobile device.

You can retrieve quite a bit of information via the online dashboard. Through the pages; Dashboard, network, devices and settings.

The various ‘sites’/locations can be managed via the menu. Whether it’s from work, sports club, family or friends. It doesn’t matter, anything goes! 🙂

Or if you’re just a bummer and adjust too many settings – for your review. Then you can easily remove a ‘site’.

When the devices are used for a while, the devices menu is of course also greatly expanded. From this you can even select which devices are in a separate VLAN, etc. In short, plenty of options!

Experience

The AP6-Pro is specially designed to give you an optimal WiFi experience. Using WiFi 6 technology and 4096 QAM modulation, this access point delivers fast speeds, stability, and extensive coverage for all your wireless devices. Seamless roaming functionality allows your devices to switch between different access points on your network effortlessly and without interruption. As a result, you can enjoy a smooth and reliable connection, even when moving around your home or office. The ease of use of the AP6-Pro is one of its strengths. With both the mobile app and the management interface, you can easily install and configure the access point. In addition, you can customize various settings for individual access points or for the entire network, such as WiFi name, password, channel, transmission power, security, and more. In addition, the AP6-Pro offers advanced features that make your network safer, faster, and smarter, including content filtering, VLAN, QoS, guest network isolation, zero wait DFS, intelligent WiFi scheduling, and much more.
