One of the most critically acclaimed city-building survival game was Fronstpunk. The sequel is coming this year with the title Frostpunk 2. The sequel takes place after 30 years of the original games. The world is shattered by a volcanic winter where you have to survive. You take the role of a resource-hungry leader to search for new sources of power.
According to Co-director Jakub Stokalsi the Frostpunk 2 is more than a sequel even though the game highly revolves around city-building.
“But inner turmoils, sparked by rising social differences, mean that players will be facing new kinds of threats. We use a post-apocalyptic setup to tell a meaningful story about human ambition. Because ultimately, what can end us is not nature itself – it’s human nature.”
Echoes of the Past: A World Transformed
The sequel is built upon its predecessor which offers the similar experience but significantly evolved. Frostpunk 2 focuses on a new society that needs to utilize smaller structures to generate heat in order to survive. The time skip also showcases how much human changed and how fast they are adapting in the frozen wasteland.
“Once they feel like they have survived the worst—and the bonding survival instinct fades—their human nature comes into play, driven by ambition that could plummet the City to its downfall.”
The world is painted absolutely grey and white. The volcanic winter has plunged the planet into an unending frozen state. This can easily lead humanity to brink of extinction. As the leader of the new metropolis, you need to strategically find ways to survive.
Building a Society from the Ashes
The core gameplay is still about building a society and survival. Players need to actively gather resources, manage supplies and construct the essential buildings for survival. The constant struggle to find heat and warmth becomes a recurring concern.
“The City progressed. Years of whiteouts have changed the world, wiping the slate clean. Society is still struggling for life-preserving supplies, but they slowly realize they’ve survived the worst of it. And that the world stands empty, ripe for the taking.”
One of the most exciting features is to construct an entire district in the game. This gives the player the freedom to build the city as their preference. Players can have an entire industrial district that can generate all the essential resources for other builds. Each district will enhance the city-building experience with great heights.
Morality and Survival
As the city grows the need for laws and regulation will become a complex matter. People may slowly have conflict of opinions which can create factions.
These factions will have conflicting political point of views. So, it is up to the players to navigate through these internal conflicts and make the right choices that will positively impact their city.
“The Council is a place where these ideas clash, sometimes violently. It’s your role as a Steward to ensure that the city will not fall because of those conflicts. Manage emerging crises while at the same time steering humanity towards a new future.”
These conflicts force the players to deal with the dark side of the humanity. So, it is up to the player if they want to go for tyrannical rule or build a society with democracy.
The Frigid Embrace of Technology
The game will also have features like researching new technology to progress further. Researching technologies will allow gamers to build new buildings, equipment and resources.
However, research can be difficult as it is scarce. So, players need to carefully consider each advancement because they might have to let go another advancement. Hence, make the most efficient and strategic decision.
