Continuing to Reign as the Best Affordable True Wireless Headphones

Upon our initial encounter with the original Lypertek PurePlay Z3 true wireless earbuds (then named the Lypertek Tevi), we were astounded. It was incredulous to find a pair of headphones offering such exceptional sound quality, extensive battery life, all at an incredibly affordable price from a relatively unknown company. So remarkable were they that we bestowed upon them the title of headphone product of the year, and prominently featured them in our analysis of the best true wireless earbuds.

Fast forward a couple of years, and we find ourselves introduced to their successors, the Lypertek PurePlay Z3 2.0 true wireless earbuds. Bearing striking similarities to the originals yet boasting several key enhancements, they maintain the same budget-friendly price point of $99 / £99.

Included in this package are all the attributes we cherished in the original PurePlay Z3: meticulously balanced sound, an impressive total battery life of 80 hours with the compact USB-C charging case, and comfortably fitting buds equipped with physical buttons. Additionally, these new earbuds offer wireless charging, a potent new LDX Audio mode, improved app functionality, and an ambient hear-through mode. Undoubtedly, they stand as one of the best affordable headphone options in 2022.

Overall, it represents a noteworthy improvement across various aspects, positioning itself as one of our top choices for wireless earbuds, as well as headphones. The LDX Audio mode delivers a rich, well-tuned sound for those desiring more depth than the near-reference default setting. Wireless charging operates seamlessly, EQ features respond effectively to adjustments, and battery life remains exceptional.

However, the app connectivity proves inconsistent at best, and the ambient hear-through mode pales in comparison to competitors such as Sony’s noise-canceling WF-1000XM4.

Nevertheless, with the price remaining remarkably low and no compromises on the quality standard established by the originals, coupled with several notable enhancements, these earbuds remain a must-have, rivaling headphones priced two or three times higher. They are a worthwhile investment.

Price and Availability

The Lypertek PurePlay Z3 2.0 is now available for $99 / £99 (approximately AU$185). Despite the inclusion of numerous new features, the price remains unchanged from its predecessors. While lacking active noise cancellation, they present a compelling challenge to competitors priced significantly higher, including the Apple AirPods Pro ($249 / £249 / AU$399) and Sony WF-1000XM4 ($279.99 / £250 / AU$449.95). They are an absolute steal.

Design

Externally, little distinguishes the Lypertek PurePlay Z3 2.0 from its predecessors, reflecting a refinement rather than a revolutionary redesign. Once again, ovoid, stemless earbuds reside within a pill-shaped case adorned with fabric, accompanied by a removable carrying strap. Both black and white versions are available, each featuring USB-C charging and four LED indicator lights to display battery levels. The earbuds snugly nestle into the case with a magnetic closure, initiating charging from the case’s internal battery upon insertion. Removing them from the case initiates the Bluetooth pairing process, with subsequent pairings unnecessary unless connecting additional devices.

Additionally, each earbud features physical buttons for volume control, track selection, playback, call management, and activation of the hear-through mode. These buttons, preferred over touch-sensitive alternatives for their reliability, may require practice to operate without further insertion into the ear.

Internally, Bluetooth 5.2 support represents an improvement, facilitating seamless handling of SBC, AAC, and aptX codecs. The Qualcomm QCC3040 chipset enhances battery life, offsetting the introduction of the aforementioned LDX Audio mode.

Audio Performance

The original Lypertek Tevi, or PurePlay Z3, excelled in delivering clear, neutral sound, falling just short of reference or audiophile quality yet astounding given its price point. This base-level, out-of-the-box tuning remains intact in the Z3 2.0. Utilizing 6mm graphene drivers, the Z3 2.0 mirrors the clarity of its predecessor, offering unbiased sound favoring studio-grade precision over accentuated frequencies. For a detailed assessment of the Z3 2.0’s out-of-the-box sound, we refer you to our original Lypertek PurePlay Z3 review.

However, while this tuning appeals to audio purists, it may not suit every scenario. For instance, if you’re at the gym and desire more bass or prefer a punchier, more powerful sound, even at the expense of balance, the new LDX Audio mode comes into play. Accessible via the accompanying app, enabling LDX Audio is akin to engaging an overdrive mode—amplifying less prominent frequencies, particularly bass tones, and expanding the soundstage. The result is a more dynamic, energetic delivery, notably distinct from the stock tuning. Both profiles possess their merits, with personal preferences dictating the choice. Personally, I found myself alternating between the two depending on the listening environment, favoring LDX Audio outdoors and reverting to the stock tuning indoors for focused listening sessions. Yet, both profiles maintain exceptional clarity, effectively highlighting details without distortion even at higher volumes, providing an immensely enjoyable listening experience.

Features

The introduction of new features presents a mixed bag. On the positive side, the LDX Audio mode, accompanied by an impressive EQ option within the app, stands out. Offering various presets ranging from Rock to Jazz, Pop to R&B, as well as presets emphasizing Bass or Treble response, users can refine the sound to suit their preferences. Additionally, two custom slots allow for personalized tunings, significantly enhancing the versatility of the earbuds.

However, other features fall short of expectations. The “Hear Through” mode, intended to amplify ambient surroundings via the earbud mics without interrupting playback, proves ineffective, failing to significantly enhance situational awareness. Similarly, the Find my Earbuds feature exhibits inconsistency, while the app occasionally struggles to identify and connect to the headphones, even without nearby wireless devices causing interference.

Despite these shortcomings, it’s challenging to levy severe criticism against the PurePlay Z3 2.0. While not without flaws, the enhancements introduced elevate the overall package compared to earlier models, all while maintaining an affordable price point.

The Bottom Line

The clock may be ticking for the Lypertek PurePlay Z3 2.0 in some regions, as newer entries among the best budget wireless earbuds have surpassed them. Competitors such as the Sony WF-C700N offer fantastic sound and reliable active noise cancellation, features lacking in the Lypertek. Alternatively, the Earfun Air Pro 3 provides ANC and a range of intelligent features at a lower price point. However, the exceptional battery life of the PurePlay Z3 2.0, with 10 hours from the buds and 80 hours total including the case, remains a standout feature. While alternatives may offer enticing features, Lypertek continues to punch above its weight and outside its pricing bracket with the PurePlay Z3 2.0
