Mirrorless cameras have gained a significant reputation for their high-quality image capturing capabilities. Many of these modern devices sport vintage-inspired designs reminiscent of traditional film cameras, appealing to both seasoned photographers and the younger generation looking for a unique touch. Here are five of the top models with retro designs that are currently available in the market:

Nikon Z f / Z fc

The Nikon Z f, a recent release from the renowned Japanese manufacturer, immediately evokes memories of legendary cameras from the synthwave music era. Its design is heavily inspired by the FM2, a durable 35mm Nikon SLR film camera known for its sturdy metal body. The Z f’s appearance is further complemented by a series of knobs on its top plate, resembling those on vintage cameras. Despite its retro look, the Nikon Z f boasts modern internals, including a 24.5 MP full-frame sensor, an 8-stop 5-axis IBIS, and the Expeed 7 image processor. Internationally, the camera is priced around $2,000.

OM Systems OM-5

Olympus, once a dominant name in the SLR film era, reincarnated its renowned OM series into the mirrorless OM Systems OM-5. Although Olympus’s camera business was sold to Japan Industrial Partners Inc. in 2021, their products continue to thrive. The OM-5, released in late 2022, features retro SLR designs and is updated with a 20 MP micro four-thirds sensor, 7.5-stop IBIS, and IP53 dust and water resistance.

Fujifilm X-Pro3

Before SLR cameras became widely popular, 35mm film cameras often featured rangefinder designs. The Fujifilm X-Pro3 adopts this retro rangefinder concept while blending it with modern technology. Its design features a hybrid viewfinder, combining elements of traditional optical viewfinders with electronic ones of contemporary mirrorless cameras. Its specs include a 26 MP APS-C X-Trans sensor and video recording capabilities up to DCI 4K at 30 fps.

Fujifilm X-T5

Another retro offering from Fujifilm, the X-T5 released last year, mirrors the vintage SLR appearance. Packed with state-of-the-art features like a 40 MP APS-C X-Trans sensor with 7-stop IBIS and a tilting touchscreen, the X-T5 remains a testament to Fujifilm’s dedication to merging the past and present. Internationally, the camera is priced similarly to the X-Pro3.

Sony A7C / A7C Mark II

Sony’s mirrorless cameras typically prioritize function over aesthetics. However, the A7C breaks this mold with its compact rangefinder-style design, reminiscent of Sony’s APS-C A6000 series, yet sporting a full-frame 24 MP sensor. It offers video recording capabilities such as HLF, S-Log2/3, and 4K at 30p, complemented by a 5-axis IBIS. The upcoming A7C Mark II promises improved features, including a bumped-up 33 MP sensor and enhanced video capabilities.

Retro designs certainly add a nostalgic charm to these cameras, appealing to both professionals and enthusiasts. As technology continues to evolve, it’s intriguing to see how brands creatively intertwine the past with the present.
