Monster Train 2 is sequel to the surprise hit of its 2020 predecessor, developed by Shiny Shoe who also created Inkbound a turn-based roguelike with deck building features as well. Monster Train 2 promises a plethora of new mechanics, clans and challenges that is sure to surpass Monster Train in every way possible.
This sequel is set to launch on May 21st of this year, it will be published by Devolver Digital’s Big Fan Games label. A playable demo is out now on Steam and will be available on PC, Xbox, Playstation and Nintendo Switch and Switch 2.
A New Journey Through Heaven And Hell
Just like in its predecessor, we have to journey through Heaven, Hell and the Abyss this time around due to a race called the Titans who have taken control of Heaven. Angels and Demons must put aside their differences and work together to reclaim their respective areas and ultimately rid the world of these new beings.
The alliance between angels and demons is sure to compel players to find synergies between these two races and ultimately adapt to changing dynamics that happen as the battles progress. A worthwhile addition is the visual effect that is seen on Champions’ cards adding more flare to the storytelling and personality to each individual character.
There are brand new clans available to choose from each offering unique strengths and strategies to use. Players can experiment and figure out which set of characters they feel are the most effective to play with thus increasing replayability.
New Types Of Cards
There are new types of cards that are going to be introduced to players which are the Room Cards and the Equipment Cards. Room cards, as the name suggests, apply environmental changes to the train’s current room giving the user a tactical advantage for some turns.
Equipment cards on the other hand are those that can be applied to individual units thus increasing their effect or damage over some number of turns. Using these cards at the right time can truly make or break a battle due to the strategic bonuses they provide.
Although it has not been mentioned the developers could add more types of cards after the game launches which of course will change up the gameplay and add even more depth to this already brilliant system.
The Covenant
At the end of each run players can visit The Covenant, where they can access core features of the sequel such as Pyre Hearts, Dimensional Challenges, Train Customization, The Logbook and many more.
The purpose of the Pyre Hearts are to bring unique changes or functionality to the gameplay such as the ability to customize the next run as well as change character interactions which in turn will progress the story.
Players can participate in various kinds of challenges that offer unique kinds of runs and completing these runs also reward exclusive cosmetic skins. Players will also have access to a glossary that contains information regarding enemies, objectives etc.
Conclusion
Monster Train 2 is already looking poised to deliver a better, more fulfilling experience than its predecessor. It offers new gameplay features that are going to change up the gameplay from before along with offering better visual design and interactions that better represent its characters.
The daily challenges and Pyre hearts are a worthwhile addition as they can add to the experience and provide unique challenges for those wanting to master their skills in the game. There are also going to be random encounters with unique enemies which may even offer changes to the gameplay itself.
All in all the game is looking to surpass the original in every way, as mentioned before they have a playable demo out right now, which will allow them to take feedback from players and fix any bugs and issues players find before the final release.
