Samsung updates its smart monitor that works without a PC for CES 2024

Samsung continues its strong presence at CES 2024 in Las Vegas, revealing an update to its smart monitor lineup. The latest addition, the Smart Monitor M80D, builds upon the feature-rich foundation of its predecessor, the Smart Monitor M8. While retaining many specifications from the 2023 release, such as resolution and the detachable camera, this version introduces notable software enhancements.

At the core of the Smart Monitor M80D is a 32-inch 4K panel, accompanied by cutting-edge features. The standout feature is the ability to use the display independently, without requiring a PC or gaming console.

However, it’s important to note that the monitor doesn’t function as a standalone computer. Its standalone capabilities include video calls through the detachable webcam and streaming content from platforms like Netflix and Prime Video. The monitor also incorporates Samsung’s Gaming Hub, enabling cloud-based streaming of various titles. Additionally, there are standalone applications for managing smart home devices, word processing, and accessing fitness metrics.

While the previous-generation M8 Smart Monitor already offered some PC-free features, the M80D takes it up a notch. It delivers HDR10+ visuals, integrated 2-channel speakers, and Bluetooth connectivity for direct pairing with other devices, such as wearables. A tool facilitates quick transfers of images and text from other Samsung devices, like Galaxy smartphones and Book laptops, to the monitor. Furthermore, it seamlessly integrates with Galaxy Buds, providing a surround sound-like experience with minimal latency.

The release date for this model is expected later this year, with pricing details yet to be disclosed. For reference, the previous-generation launched at $700 but often saw substantial discounts.

In a surprising move, Samsung also announced a 3D monitor, a technology that was once popular over a decade ago but has since waned in popularity due to limited use cases. The 3D monitor introduces a novel application by offering access to VR content without the need for a headset.
