Tails of Iron 2: Whiskers of Winter – A Brutal Yet Beautiful Sequel

News

The original Tails of Iron is a brutal yet visually pleasing action RPG game with elements of soulslike formula. Tails of Iron is known for their storybook aesthetic art style. Odd Bug Studio released the sequel Tails of Iron 2: Whiskers of Winter on 28th January 2025 and the community is loving it!

The developers introduced new gameplay mechanics with a vast new world. The combat system is more refined which makes the experience more immersive. The sequel will follow the main lead called Arlo who is the young heir to the Warden of the Wastes. You will be in Arlo’s shoes fighting against the newest threat known as the Dark Wings.

“As Arlo, heir to the Warden of the Wastes, adventure through harsh northern lands, home to giant beasts and ragtag bandits, in an epic quest to overcome an ancient, blood-starved evil.”

A Gritty Yet Hopeful Tale

“Just as the Rats of the South start to piece their lives together, following the great war between Rodent and Frog, an old and unspeakable evil stirs in the North”

The storytelling of the game feels straight out of a medieval fairytale with a twist of soulslike darkness. The major event takes place after the events of the first game. When the Rats of the South finally get some peace of mind to piece together their lives after the great war things start to go downhill again.

The Rodents notice that there is an old and unspeakable evil with black wings and sharp fangs hungry for blood trying to get in the way. As Arlo, young heir to the Warden of the Wastes your responsibility is to bring back peace and balance.

“The time for heroes is over. For the Kingdom needs a warrior; forged of the North and as cold as the snow that shrouds these lands. A rat… carved from iron.”

Gameplay: Bigger, Better, and More Brutal

The combat system of Tails of Iron 2: Whiskers of Winter is punishing yet it is rewarding. Every fight requires you to perfect your dodges, blocks and counterattacks. These elements kind of remind you of the epic chaos of soulsborne games. Moreover, the combat feels more tactical rather than just climbing your way up through hack and slash.

“Fully narrated by RPG-legend, Doug Cockle, prepare to embark on an epic adventure across the northern realms of the Ratdom; an expansive, frost-bitten land on the brink of all-out war.”

Unlike the first game the sequel has more expansive features. The game is almost a semi-open world which gives players the freedom for exploration. Moreover, There are also RPG elements because you get to craft gear, customize weapons and upgrade your settlements.

The developers also added a brand-new feature which allows you to get your own mounts. As Arlo you can tame some creatures to make the traversal easier.

Combat Mechanics: More Tactical Than Ever

The combat system of Whiskers of Winters has been refined. Players can now duel wield weapons which is very good news for all the players who bonk their way through the bosses. You can also have a sword and shield approach to play on the defensive side.

Secondly, there is a new parry system. If you block timely you can push a punishing counterattack. It is almost like the Sekiro mechanism and of course if you mistime your parry you will take big damage.

The game also allows you to use your surroundings to get an upper hand. The environment combat in the game is quite compelling. You can use spiked traps or falling icicles to your advantage.

The game provides refined combat, stunning visuals and an immersive world. If you played the previous game before you will definitely love the sequel as well!
