Electric vehicles are everywhere. But what if you could ride one that screams “you”? Enter the Teenage Engineering x Vässla EPA 1, a modular electric moped designed for personalization and fun. The EPA 1 blends design and utility in an elegant, minimalist ride that resembles a Swiss Army Knife on wheels rather than a typical scooter.
What is the EPA 1?
The EPA 1 (short for En Passar Alla, which translates from Swedish to “One Fits All”) is the first electric moped created by Teenage Engineering in partnership with Swedish micromobility brand Vässla. Rather than an electric bike or scooter, the EPA 1 infuses TE’s minimalist design characteristic into two-wheeled vehicles. It melds considered design fundamentals with practical use.
Design Philosophy: “One Fits All”
At its core, the EPA 1 is all about uncomplicated wisdom. Teenage Engineering’s design philosophy (clear lines, perfect proportion, bold minimalism) paired with Vässla’s mission to create utility. The EPA 1 has an intentionally basic, but intelligent structure, providing just enough space for a world of personalization.
Modular Customization: Build Your Own
Do you remember the freedom of Lego? The EPA 1 invites that back in with its eleven reinforced mounting points along its frame. This means anything from racks, boxes, helmets, seats, baskets, decals, etc. can all provide the opportunity to stamp your personality on the EPA 1. As Vässla says, “the small screw holes represent big possibilities.”.
Power & Performance Options
You have an option of two legal levels of PED, provided the EPA1 complies with the legal requirements where you live as a rider and hitching is only intended for a bike path.
- Class 1: 2,600 W brushless hub motor, can achieve a maximum speed of 45 km/h (28 mph). Road legal. A license layer for Class 1 events may be required (3).
- Class 2: 1,000 W brushless hub motor, speed limited to 25 km/h (15.5 mph). Use as a booster away on bike paths and any permit free area.
Both versions maintain similar torque delivery characteristics, down to 140 Nm (about 103 lb·ft) torque – just enough for zippy, urban riding.
Battery & Range
You can select from two LiFePO₄ (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery packs that are easy to remove:
- 30 Ah (~1,800 Wh) — ~70 kms (43 m) range for each charge, and
- 50 Ah (~3,000\,Wh) – 100 km and greater, or 62 mi. events, range for each charge.
Charge at home or leave it plugged in indoors to maintain a charged system. LiFePO₄ chemistry was selected for its excellent cycle durability, safety and overall long-lasting lifespan.
Smart Tech & Safety Features
Techie rider / gadget fans will love all of this:
- Three riding modes: Eco, Normal, Boost
- LED lighting package: dual beam headlights, taillights, turn signals
- Hydraulic regenerative braking system
- NFC keyless start, rear wheel alarm and auto-lock
- USB A/USB C ports for charging, mobile technology becomes viable
- IP67 rated motor – resistant to water exposure and robust for city riding.
Colors, Materials & Durability
We’re excited about launching bold with black – frame, screws, everything, with scratches appearing as matte. Later we will be expanding our model options with yellow, white, red, and blue offers. We decided upon solid colored panels that we feel will wear much better than using paint.
Price & Launch Edition
The EPA 1 sells for 19,990 SEK (approximately US $2,000 to $2,100) and while it seemed unbelievable to me to find a product with a low price in this era, it’s an accessible price, especially for an electrical vehicle cheaper than TE’s OP 1 synth. The first 50 units will be matte black and numbered; coveted collectibles as it seems.
Accessories & Upgrades
More customizing options:
- Front racks; passenger seats
- Helmet boxes; cargo baskets
- Atran Velo (AVS) adapter
- Pride decals and floor stickers
Add-on accessories can be as inexpensive as labels (~200 SEK) to larger accessory attachments (~1,990 SEK).
Eco Friendly Urban Appeal
The EPA 1 is a green urban commuter. Dual USB charging, quiet operation, and up to 100 km (62 miles) riding capability under moderate loading conditions (a rider, bags, etc.) per charge offers excellent range. The swappable battery gives the EPA 1 real longevity, flexibility, and accessibility—just bring the dead battery in and ride the bike until you get there.
Who is the EPA 1 for?
In my opinion, this is ideal for someone who is:
- A design Lover who wants curb appeal.
- A urban commuter who wants a zero emission option.
- A maker, who enjoys customizing gear.
- A synth/music lover, who finds joy in consistency of design.
- Someone who wants a practical and stylish vehicle for the city.
Pros & Cons Summary
