In September of last year, we introduced you to the SSC SC-01, a sports car offering the performance of a Volkswagen Golf at a fraction of the cost. While the initial plans showed promise, uncertainty surrounded the actual release of the model. Thanks to Xiaomi’s substantial investment, the affordable electric sports car is now making its way into production.
Constructed by Tianjin Gongjiangpai Auto Technology, a Chinese startup, this sports car marks the company’s inaugural model. Xiaomi’s financial backing has played a pivotal role in bringing the affordable electric sports car to fruition, with the tech giant reportedly investing millions of Chinese renminbi in the startup. While the amount may seem substantial, it is worth noting that one million Chinese renminbi equates to less than 130,000 euros.
The first SSC SC01 has successfully rolled off the production line, and plans are underway for large-scale sales later this year. Priced at less than 300,000 Chinese renminbi in China, the model translates to approximately 38,831 euros. This budget-friendly electric sports car boasts an impressive 436 hp and 560 Nm of torque, thanks to two electric motors—one on the front and one on the rear axle.
Equipped with a 60 kWh battery pack, the manufacturer claims a range of 520 kilometers on a full charge. Furthermore, rapid charging from 30 to 80 percent can be accomplished in just 25 minutes.
Considering the importance of weight in sports cars, the two-seater reportedly weighs 1,370 kilograms, although skepticism remains about this optimistic estimate. While substantial weight savings have been achieved in the interior, it’s worth noting that if the car makes its way to Europe, it could become more expensive and heavier due to the stringent safety requirements imposed on cars in the region.
