TCL being one of the brands that has emerged in recent years has set itself the task of selling affordable devices with good picture quality and functions. The TCL QM7 is one of the brand’s better models of the 2023 4K LED TVs. I bought the 65QM751G model that cost $1,199/- for 65-inches as the primary television in the living room. Below are the results after I have been using it for a few weeks now.

Picture Quality

As for the TCL model, the company refers to the QM7 as the “Quantum Dot” TV. This seems to be attributable to the quantum dot technology in the panel, which offers a broader and tighter gamut. I tested QLED 65QM751G with different 4K HDR movie and TV shows via Netflix and Hulu, and the TV delivers impressive picture quality, bright and saturated colors, and deep blacks for LED panel.

The QM7 features a Local Dimming which makes a big difference in boosting contrast since LED zones behind the screen are able to be dimmed individually. Owing its 100 plus local dimming zones, the 65-inch model handles this dimming very well with moderate haloing around bright objects. It is truly mind-boggling that picture quality can rival todays much more expensive flagship TVs from the major brands.

In scaling up HD content, this TV is also very good. SD content does not look as sharp following the up-scaling to 4K, however it remains quite clear, free from a lot of noise or artefacts. Some of the other features related to display quality such as refresh rate and motion handling are also good for movies, tv shows and sports. Max is set to 120Hz with backlight scanning to create a fake 240Hz. Because of the fast response time, fast motion scenes have very little motion blur.

HDR Performance

Here, the HDR formats include HDR10, HLG and Dolby Vision. It gets bright enough for HDR to shine in the manner that we expect from today’s premium flagship phones. It can look quite fantastic with increased dynamic range, as is the case with HDR material. My HDR test patterns put the peak brightness at around 800 nits, which is nice for this sort of set.

The TV handles high dynamic range content fairly well and does not overexpose or underexpose any details within extreme brightness levels. My only niggle is that it does not quite max out full screen brightness as the image becomes darker. However, that is another good thing about the overall HDR experience since the price for these TVs is relatively affordable.

Gaming

Players will enjoy this TV’s fast input lag of as low as 7ms, and its native refresh rate of 120Hz. When you turn on the Game Mode, the input lag is around 10ms that should ensure that action-oriented games are incredibly responsive. The HDMI ports, 2.1 are present and the key gaming functionality include Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) and up to 4K/120Hz passthrough.

Smart TV Features

TCL navigates the QM7 with its Google TV, smart platform for streaming apps and services. Google TV enjoys great app compatibility with most all the major streaming services including Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, HBO Max and YouTube. Google Assistant voice commands are also fast when looking for content or when controlling functions of a television.

Google TV has one large advantage in the fact that it is easily adaptable to your tastes and comfort zone. My Home App personalizes itself and makes the apps and shows you use most often featured on your home screen. There are also features allowing to create several user profiles. The only limitation is that the software can become a little unresponsive when moving from one section to another in a program. However, as soon as the content begins its transmission, the speed and continuity of content delivery are as expected.

Design & Sound Quality

It is only 65QM751G and in terms of depth it measures a mere 2.25 inches, despite being a full-array local dimming (FALD) LCD TV. This design is viewed in the metal stands with a broad, arched single bar running across the back of each one. That is why its bezel is ultrathin, thus letting emphasize on the large, bright 65-inch 4K image. As suitable for this screen size, the total weight of 48.5 lbs. is also quite easy to maneuver.

Audio is supplied through bottom firing speakers with an RMS rating of 30W total. It is quite eligible to make volume reach rather high without causing noticeable sound quality degeneration. However, there isn’t much of bass production in the native LG G3 built-in speakers. It’s a shame it doesn’t come with a better audio system and you’ll want to connect it with a soundbar or a surround system to complement the visuals this TV has. But most of those intending to purchase a TV at this price range do not really have intentions of getting the best audio quality that small built-in speakers can offer.

Conclusion

They are the TCL QM7 65QM751G which is a mid-range LED LCD television that overperforms in all aspects. Under $1000 you will have clear 4K and high dynamic range pictures which are quite better than those of some of the brand new Samsung, LG and Sony TVs. Players are particularly going to enjoy the super swift response time and next gen gaming compatibility.

It must be noted, however, that the integrated sound quality could be better, but for a TV that costs this much, that is my only major issue with the TCL. You owe it to yourself to check out the TCL Quantum Dot QM7 series if you wish to get the quantum dot color, local dimming, and 120Hz gaming capability with at par.smart features without paying for too much. So, for everything that this TV does for this kind of money, the 65QM751G fully deserves my recommendation.
