Tides of Annihilation was one of the highlights of Playstation’s February state of play, It is being developed by Eclipse Glow Games, a chinese company that is backed by Tencent. It seems this is their first game to be released as there are no other games on their Steam page. There is no set release date yet but it is confirmed to be launching on Playstation 5 and Xbox and PC.
The Environment And Setting
Set in a fantastical modern London ravaged by some kind of a mystical force, we play as Gwendolyn who has the ability to summon spectral Knights of the round table to fight alongside her for brief moments, this mechanic is also seen in the recently Ender Magnolia as well.
The video showcased a desolate london with broken buildings and ravaged roads that our protagonist Gwendolyn and her companion Ninniane explore. The streets and shops are in an unimaginable state with victims stuck in their last moments as they have been turned to stones.
It also seems Gwendolyn and Ninniane are visiting some time after the catastrophe occurs as flora seems to have taken over some parts of the ghostly city roads. Looking at the environment it seems whatever happened came from underground as there are steep drops everywhere where the road should be.
Combat Mechanics
As mentioned before, Gwendolyn can summon multiple spectral knights who each perform one move before disappearing. From the combat showcased it seemed as if this was happening at the press of a single button.
The knight can be commanded to perform an attack on a different enemy than the one Gwendolyn targets, sort of showcasing the crowd control that can be executed. Another thing to notice is that each of the attacks each individual knight performs, it seems the attacks themselves perform specific tasks like lift an enemy up, stagger an enemy or stop them in place.
Each of the attacks are also associated with an element it seems as each Knight either attacked with Fire, Ice or Earth. What is a breathtaking sight is the fact that we can make the knights attack in quick succession which leads to satisfying combo strings of multiple elements.
Their steam page also mentions that along with the boss battle that was in the showcase we will also get to fight these colossal knights, whom we have to climb into to uncover the power that governs them, it could be that we gain the ability to summon Knights from these colossal beings.
Sound Design And Music
The sound design is already phenomenal if the showcase can be taken at face value, each step Gwendolyn takes feels natural and the subtle piano playing in the background is a beautiful touch that brings on an emotion of sadness.
But it naturally shifts to a faster paced music with drums and strings as soon as combat starts that feels extremely satisfying to hear as we see the player perform these amazing combos but there are some parts that do need work.
Even though this is a showcase and is subject to change, the voice delivery sometimes felt off sync, this could be due to the mouths not matching correctly with the dialogue or maybe it was given as much attention for this showcase.
Conclusion
This could be another certified hit if the showcase video is anything to go off of, although it does require some polish and there are things that are subject to change but overall this game will likely be worth the price it asks for. The combat was fluid and smooth and the music was satisfying and beautiful.
Since this was sort of like a reveal trailer of sorts, there is much information available in terms of the story and how in-depth it could be. Taking information from the available video and their Steam page it’s clear that Gwendolyn has to fight using these spectral knights to ultimately save her family.
Since there is no release date as of yet those of us interested can only wait for more information to come out from Eclipse Show Games, It could be that the game get released next year as even the showcase stated it is still in development for the Playstation 5.
