The Dell Inspiron 14 2-in-1 7445 is a 14-inch laptop that transforms into a tablet as it has a feature of flipping and folding in different positions such as tent mode. This is the kind of 2-in-1 I recently got an opportunity to use for few weeks and I thought it is proper to write a review about it.

Design and Build

The Inspiron 14 7445 has a aluminum chassis that gives it a premium look and feel. The matte black finish is quite fingerprint resistant as well. It measures 0.7 inches in thickness and weighs 3.5 pounds, which makes it neither too bulky nor too small for a screen. Though not the most portable 14-inch laptop, the Dell G5 15 5590 is a laptop that carries a good weight that makes it portable without compromising the build quality.

The four hundred and sixty degree hinges enable the screen to be flipped all the way back to enable the use of the device as a tablet. The hinges have a substantial feedback, making it possible to switch between the modes with one hand only. Tablet mode is quite suitable for general web surfing or video streaming. Sliding the optional Dell Active Pen enables drawing or taking notes with handwriting.

Display

This model comes with a 14-inch LED-backlit HD display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. The screen is incredibly clear with rich colors, and the images can be viewed at various angles. Contrast ratio is decent at 2200:1 though maximum brightness is slightly low at 220 nits but sufficient for indoor usage. Touch response is good to have and can be utilized for tapping, scrolling, zooming with multi touch gestures. It is only minimally reflective when used near a window with a lot of light; however, the matte displays reduce reflections.

In general, the color is vibrant – watching streaming videos and editing photographs is enjoyable. The screen has some movement when it is in use as a touch tablet, but palm rejection is quite good when one places their palm down to write.

Hardware and Performance

An adequately powerful AMD A9-9410 dual core processor with Radeon R5 integrated graphics and 8GB RAM provides smooth multitasking for everyday computing. It performs well in terms of web browsing, office applications, and video conferencing. It can also accommodate some basic level gaming and photo editing tasks.

The 256GB Solid State Drive helps in faster booting and swift program or file access. There is an open SODIMM slot which can be utilized to expand RAM in the future if it is required. The connectivity options are 1 USB 3.0, 1 USB 2.0, HDMI, and an SD card reader. Other wireless technologies and standards offered are Wi-Fi 802.11ac and Bluetooth 4.2.

The 720p webcam is good enough to capture decent quality videos for video conferencing. Sound output through the speakers is good with adequate bass response and volume to fill a small room with music. It also has a bottom mounted speakers which might be a tad muffled when it is used in tablet mode. The battery life is up to 7 hours of continuous usage. When it comes to battery usage, I was getting about 5-6 hours of usage with the phone on a full charge.

Software

The Inspiron 2-in-1 uses the Windows 10 Home operating system by default. Dell also installs many of its own applications such as Dell Mobile Connect, Support Assist, and Dell CinemaColor for managing and enhancing the performance of your system. The apps are quite useful but some of them are bloatwares like trial versions of McAfee security and Dropbox. This trialware can be easily uninstalled if the user wants to free up some disk space on the device.

The Inspiron 14 7445 can be regarded as quite a worthy proposal in terms of the performance/feature set/price ratio. that makes it versatile for different applications. Students may need pen support for note taking. Business users get portability for work on the other hand. Business travelers who travel often will enjoy the thin and light convertible design. Everyone can be entertained with the media consumption as the 14-inch full HD touch display is bright and colourful.

AMD processor and integrated Radeon graphics for average gaming and content creation tasks. The integrated graphics might be sufficient for mainstream users, but hardcore gamers and creative professionals might need a stronger discrete card. Also, when it comes to running demanding applications, one should also think about the upgrade of an amount of RAM. Measuring 11.3 x 8.3 x 0.7 inches and weighing 3.97 pounds, it is a good middle ground between having a large screen and not having the device being extremely heavy yet lighter options are available for those who are keen on portability.

The Bottom Line

The Dell Inspiron 14 7445 2-in-1 is an affordable mainstream laptop hybrid with a 14-inch screen, adequate performance, and portability. The flip hinges ensure that it can be easily switched between a laptop and tablet enhancing the versatility of the product. The touch screen display is great and makes visual work a pleasure. Audio quality and battery life are also advantages.

The Inspiron 2-in-1 isn’t the most powerful or the high-end device out there, but it offers great value for mid-tier money with its flexibility. This highly versatile, convertible notebook should suit students, travelers, business users and home users who seek an all-round notebook suitable for most day-to-day tasks.

The Dell Inspiron 14 7445 2-in-1 is not available at the moment but the Dell Inspiron 7430 is a great alternative!
