G’day, mate! Today’s review is something completely different. From the other side of the world, we’ve received a very interesting product; the espresso 17 Pro display, with pen, stand, and battery. And this… is something absolutely paramount for every traveling workaholic, or graphic designer. When it comes to the highly portable performance package this is it; 4K touchscreen, aerospace aluminium body, and those special accessories such as the Espresso Pen and Stand Pro.

I have been using the display for a few months now, and this is my review of this amazing product!

Brightness You Can Rely On

This is a portable screen. It’s impossible to make it 3000 nits and make sure it’s always on full brightness, this will drain the espresso battery (I would have never thought to say something like that, the espresso battery. Ha!) – portable battery of course – in no time. And that’s something that would not help out for the traveler. This is the same reason why it’s 60Hz only.
These levels of brightness are most suitable when one is operating in a well lit environment or outside the house. It makes certain that at any point of time, whether you are working on the computer or using it to relax, watch videos or play games, you are able to read what is displayed on the screen without having to tilt your head or lean closer to the screen. The 10-bit color depth allows the display more tone in shades of color, this comes in handy when performing color-sensitive operations such as graphic designing.
During my time whilst playing/working with the display, I’d had no problem looking at it, it was bright enough.
Connectivity and Power
USB-C Ports with Power Passthrough
The Espresso 17 Pro comes equipped with two USB-C ports with power throughput so you can use and power other devices. This make it very convenient to use, regardless of what you are connecting it to, your laptop, smartphone or other accessories. The power passthrough enables charging of the devices connected to the wall chargers hence eliminating the usage of many cables.
Single USB-C Cable Power
Can it get any better? ABSOLUTELY! Gone are the days where you have to find the different cables and adapters. The Espresso 17 Pro uses only a single USB-C cable for power and the actual image. This means.. you can just hook it up to a MacBook Pro and.. BAM there is your second screen, with just 1 cable! How amazing is that. It means less wires to manage, and less wire mess on the desk.
The single cable solution was convenient especially for people who switch between different locations on a regular basis. It saves time because you do not have to connect so many cables every time you try to set up work workspace. How annoying is it, that you have to connect so many cables when arriving at the office. This screen is just 1 cable directly on the MacBook or two if you use the battery as well.
Do you need more cables? That’s also possible. Espresso does sell HDMI, or Mini DisplayPort cables!

The body is light and therefore convenient to hold and write with for a long period of time (it’s comparable with the Apple stylus). Because the tip is replaceable you can continue to write with the pen for many more years; the tail eraser enables you to rub out writing mistakes (just like a real pencil – mind blown..).

The Espresso Stand Pro can be placed at the optimal height and angle due to the magnetic connection. Meaning, the display will just stay on it’s place. Funny enough; you can put the monitor horizontal or vertical, and with the EspressoFlow software the screen will also just flip around as well – without having to change anything in it’s settings.
It is constructed with solid plastic materials for durability and it is adjustable for writing or for drawing at an 18-degree angle to give a rather comfortable posture. This allows a user to position the item in a favorable angle for typing, drawing or in case one wants to watch a video.

One of the things I noticed, is that the charge and stand get quite dusty to it’s magnetism. I cleaned the table before shooting the review, and I took it out of the box. I mean how the hell is my house so dusty?
Smart Power Management
The smart power management of the Espresso Charge gives power consumption data analysis in a desktop device while using espressoFlow. This enables you to track you battery consumption and manage you power consumption .
Smart functions enable you to timely charge your battery or even get the best performance of it. Through the management of the amount of electricity consumed you are able to see which hard and soft appliances and applications consume a lot of electricity so that you can find a way of minimizing their consumption in order to make the battery to last longer. This enables the user keeps working for longer periods without having to look for a power outlet or have a power source nearby. Even better would be if the charge itself had a small display with just a count of percentage. From 0 to 100%. Or EspressoFlow could give warnings @ a certain percentage. Or the screen itself. But these are extreme measures to show the battery life. It’s not that hard to click and check the percentage.
Conclusion
Like stated before, I have been using the Espresso 17 Pro, with the stand, pen and charge for a while – for months – and it’s still one of the first things I pack when I go outside. If I travel, work or even review in some random place, I use a second screen. Also because it’s always great to have an extra display to show more data at the same time – without having to alt+tab hundreds times per hour.
Espresso Displays send me these products, for free, and in exchange for a review and have – like I mentioned in my introduction – nothing to say about my review. But.. Maaaaaannn, what an awesome product. I have a MacBook Pro 16 and these two look and especially work GREAT together. Especially since I travel a lot and work around the country, the second screen comes in handy. Really. I really don’t care that when I am sitting in a bar, café (no Starbucks, there are limits :P), I have two screens in front of me and I work way better than just with one. If you ask me, would you buy it yourself? Yes, I would.. Yes..
And now to the quality of the products itself; simply great.. Really, I can explain again that it’s 4K and touchscreen, but it just really works out. The awesome part of a 4k screen is that the ppi (pixels per inch) are quite high on this one. And that makes it a sharp image. I have been editing – via Lightroom – my pictures of this review, and it looks good. Even when I move forward between my MacBook’s 16 inch display and this one.
And if you are not sure about the exact colors because they have to be absolutely precise, then you can always just calibrate the monitor to make it even more optimal.
